About Tungsten

What is Tungsten?

Tungsten is a very hard and dense metal symbolized by a W or number 74 on the periodic elements table that is extracted from Wolframite ore. Tungsten is used as the filament wire in light bulbs because of it's high melting point. Tungsten melts at temperatures around 6,200 degrees Fahrenheit.

What are the benefits of buying Tungsten Carbide rings?

Durability! The Tungsten Carbide ring has a brilliant high polish, like a mirror, and resists scratching longer than any other metal. It is roughly ten times harder than 18k gold and four times harder than Titanium. When Tungsten is processed with carbon and other elements it is transformed into Tungsten Carbide.  It's hardness rating lies between 8 and 9 on the Mohs hardness scale. Diamonds have a rating of 10.

How is Tungsten Carbide made?

Tungsten with carbon and other elements are ground into a powder and then compressed to form a ring blank. This ring blank is then fired in an oxygen-free furnace at around 6,200 degrees Fahrenheit and thus becomes Tungsten Carbide.

The ring is then cut and shaped using diamond tools with up to 40 total separate steps required for completion. The cutting and shaping of a tungsten ring is similar in many ways to the cutting and polishing of a rough diamond. Precious metal Inlay rings with gold, silver, or platinum are created by grinding a channel in the center of the ring and adding the metal into the channel under extreme pressure.

The Tungsten ring is then skillfully polished with diamond polishing tools and creating a permanent luster and polish.
